Kawaii Success Stories
19/SEP/2010 on air

Okarie-chan was only a minor dokumo a year and a half ago. She appeared on Tokyo Kawaii TV as a fast fashion model. But now she has become a director of her own fashion brand!

What made her that popular? It was her cell phone blogging. She shares with her readers how to make up with before and after photos and all the details step by step, sometimes with her drawings included. Anyone who reads her blog can be a cutting-edge Shibuya-styled gyaru. A hair salon has 30 new customers each month since Okarie-chan introduced it in her blog. Her fans love to visit the hair salon or the nail salon she refers to because they want to copy her. Companies find her a good monitor who promotes their goods. False lashes that she introduced in her blog several month ago sold more than 200,000 sets. “We had a hard time promoting our magazine but from now on, we think it’s better to count on their mouth-communication power” says the chief editor of popteen magazine.

Okarie-chan’s parents buy all the magazines that Okarie-chan appears. They want their daughter to come back home, but that seems difficult.

Ayaka-chan is a big fan of Okarie-chan’s. She wants to look like Okarie-chan but her problem is the up-angled eyes.
Okarina-chan give her a makeup. To make droopy eyes, apply eye shadow on the bottom lids but only 1/3 from the tail of eyes. Then draw upper eyelid line about 5mm longer than actual end of the eyes. Apply false lashes with 2 bunches longer than the actual end of the eyes. Make the curl of the lashes upper at the corner of the eyes and twist them to lower at the tail of the eyes. Lower lashes are only for the tail of the eyes, and place them lower than the edge of the eyes.

Mari Natsuki asked Kai-kun to design and create the accessories that she and her backup dancers wear on their stage. Kai-kun prepared balls made of polystyrene foam, rhinestones, studs and decoration parts and hand crafted the accessories all by himself. With big earrings, he also made 80cm long hair stick, lip-themed broach and huge rings. Mari’s live event in Paris was very successful. (Mari voice acted Yubaba in the movie “Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi“.

Kai-kun put some makeup on Rurina-chan so she can look gorgeous.
Kai-kun is good at Gyaru makeup because he likes reading Gyaru magazines to learn how to do it better. He also helps his male friends who are interested in dressing like a woman.

6% DokiDoki held an audition to hire a new shop girl a few years ago. Yukari-san won the position and she’s been working as “vani-chan”. They have travelled in the U.S and Europe to spread Harajuku culture and they gained international fans all over the world. 6% DokiDoki’s shop girls are tough. They are not just sales assistants anywhere. They are even working out for 2 hours after they close the shop, because they must be the top of top sales assistants!

Both Ayaka-chan and Rurina-chan changed dramatically thanks to makeup!

Kirin’s opinion:
It was very impressive that Okarie-chan said, “I want to show how I am now to myself in this time last year.” (She said this in Japanese but I guess this is English translation.) I liked this part. No matter what, it’s wonderful when one can say this. I want to say this every year. I want to improve my life all the time. icon biggrin Kawaii Success Stories

I love that people take such effort to look good and pretty. I only take 5 mins of course not as pretty as they are.

  3. Laura Cruz Said,

I just discovered your blog after viewing your Decotti videos on youtube! Great site…I am looking forward to checking out the Learn Japanese section and looking at all the great videos and reviews you have here.

  4. kirin Said,

I cannot spend so much time for grooming myself either. Too many other things to do~ >_<

  5. kirin Said,

Welcome Laura! Thank you for visiting TKE blog over here.
I have not made learn Japanese videos lately because I'm too busy. But I'll try to when I can have more time in the future. :)

  6. Hanie Said,

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOO Much! I love Okarie~!

  7. Diyana Said,

I also want to wear gyaru make up but make up is so costly. I do like Okarie's short hairstyle too.

  8. Sana Said,

Nooo! Yubaba! Leave Kai-kun alone! I didn't recognise the name, but certainly the voice, so formidable! Kai seems to be doing rather well ^^ Does he get publicity other than from Tokyo Kawaii TV?

I can think of someone who would love to be on the cover of Popteen… Care to knock Okarie off the top spot, Apple? ;p

Thanks for the upload, as ever Kirin! Sx

  9. Emily Said,

Awesome episode!! This show seriously needs to come over to the States! I loved the kawaii makeovers!! I went to Cosmetology school so I can appreciate how they extended the look of their eyes with makeup :D I'm always super inspired by these shows!!

  10. Sachie Said,

Wow, what a success story! Like every girl's dream! *__*
I wonder what kind of cell phone she's using! It's very pretty!

  11. kirin Said,

That Yubaba's voice actress is a well-known Japanese actress ^ ^; but yes her voice sounds scary haha!

  12. kirin Said,

Tokyo Kawaii TV has been on air in some Asian countries such as Hong Kong, China or Vietnam. But I guess you can watch it with English subs on cable TV in the states.

  13. kirin Said,

Many Japanese cell phones are pretty thanks to many color variations and designs. :)

  14. Apple Said,

Oh Sana! Haha! How I wish I could be on the cover of Popteen!! It's been my favourite Japanese magazine since I was 16! T^T How about you??? ^^

  15. Apple Said,

Kirin!! I absolutely loved this episode! I was there at Ank Rouge's opening! The queue was really so long!!! But I was happy because I saw Okarie. I love Okarie! I like what she said too. "I want to show myself of last year how I am now." It made me motivated again. ^^

Love this episode!! Thanks for the upload!!

And omg how much I love Kai-kun! He inspires me so much too! ^^

  16. cinnamon_girl Said,

It's nice to watch these success stories!
I like how Tokyo Kawaii TV follows some artistic people's projects or progress and how people from previous episodes reappear!
I laughed at Mr Ikki's comment when Okarie applied makeup on that girl. :D
By the way, I think that girl's up-angled eyes are really beautiful. I like that eyeshape! Why is it a problem for her? Is droopy eye considered cute or popular in Japan?

  17. kirin Said,

OMG, you were in that line and saw Okarie in person!!

  18. kirin Said,

    How interesting!
Japanese people would think those up-angled eyes are so sharp that they give us the impression that she is cold or strict or not nice. Droopy eyes are very popular especially among Gyaru girls because they look sweeter.

But I noticed western people sometimes like asian look.
When I was in the U.S, my Mexican guy friends mentioned the Japanese girls who have sharp eyes and very Japanese face look prettier. To us Japanese girls, western look is prettier. How interesting to see how people feel for beauty.

  19. cinnamon_girl Said,

It's true, that sharp eyes can give a cold impression, but I think it's easier to apply make-up on up-angled eyes, especially eyeliner, because you don't have to work hard to make the tail at the end look even, and cat-eye makeup is easier to achieve.
I have droopy eyes and before, I got comments like I always look sleepy (even when I'm 100% awake and fresh), and that people might feel that I'm not paying attention to them because of my sleepy and tired look. @_@

  20. Sana Said,

Umm, *fidget fidget* I prefer 'Cotton Time!' haha! I'm getting old!

  21. Apple Said,

Eh? What is 'Cotton Time'??? Haha! Anyway, thanks, you just reminded me that I'm not getting younger too. HAHAHA! I should really snap out of this dream! Haha! Ok! Pass me that Cotton Time! :D
