Remake & Deco
12/SEP/2010

Fast fashion brands have been remarkable on the main streets in Ginza lately. It’s surprising but Yuzawaya also opened a shop in Ginza! What’s interesting is that the customers who purchased clothing from one of the fast fashion brands drop at Yuzawaya to find deco items to make their simple clothing something very unique. It was actually “Deco-Clo” team that fueled deco boom. Now Deco-Clo team is consist of 1700 members. What’s more, it’s introduced in a art textbook of middle school’s. Deco applied to clothing has become nothing special any longer. Everyone does that as a matter of course in Japan.

Mr. Ikki and Beni-chan also try to add decorations on 1000-yen simple T-shirt. Okadaya Shinjuku is a craft store with over half a million deco and sewing goods. It’s a deco heaven. Oozu-san, a cross-stitch designer likes needlework, he became a sales assistant at a craft shop. Then he started his business as an independent cross-stitch designer. Oozu-san’s cross-stitched patches have sold 5000 pieces in 4 months. That was quite successful.

Akane-chan is not just a fashion model, she is good at remodeling clothes. Beni-chan with Akane-chan, Mr. Ikki with Oozu-san, they started to make deco T-shirts.

Deco masters on the streets are also so cool. They enjoy their unique deco fashion.

Speaking of Aomori, it’s a prefecture that produces luxurious suits from hand work. Those people spent over 10 years to acquire the skills. For example, people from show business are their major customers. Sasaki-san, an artisan of suite making decorated 1000-yen T-shirt in Aomori way.

Fashion Koshien is a fashion show by high school kids. Rie-chan has been awarded several prizes, she is a sweep awards of high school fashion contests. How would she decorate 1000-yen T-shirt?

A unit of Chika-chan and Riho-chan won a vice champion. Riho-chan started sewing when she was only 6 years old! She makes dress for a music band, she has already established her own brand, nevertheless she is only a high school student! Riho-chan’s T-shirt deco became a one-piece style and Chika-chan’s one is a long version one-piece.

Tsutaya-san and her friends are making small cat dolls from real cat fur. How to make it? Collect cat fur from combing it for 2 days, and wrap the pattern paper made of milk carton. The cat fur is becoming like a felt when washed in the water. Add decorations such as beads and ribbons, and it’s done! It only takes about 20 minutes. Her book was even published in Taiwan and sold 20,000 copies.

Handmade eraser was a big hit that recorded 650,000 sales. Abe-san is in charge of the product development. He needs to take in what’s new now, and produce more nice and cute designs one after another. His advisors are grade school girls. He visits them to ask their honest opinions as monitors.

Now look at Mr. Ikki and Beni-chan’s deco shirts. How the high school girls from Fashion Koshien will evaluate these shirts?

Kirin’s opinion:
I’m always attracted by remake and deco! But when I do that, I want to learn how to use a sewing machine properly first. I wonder when I can finally get down to it…
But I don’t like to spend so much for deco parts. Deco materials can be several times more expensive than the 1000yen T-shirt. Also, if my sewing skills are lame, I could ruin the T-shirt, too. Cat fur can be like felt? How about dog fur? I wonder if I can also make something from Pi-chan’s fur…lol The eraser making looks so fun! But I will have no chance to use erasers in my daily life any longer. I normally use pens, so I don’t need erasers…I wish I were a student who still needs erasers to study. I’ll be crazy about thinking of the designs and creating erasers with this fancy machine…Wow…I’m totally attracted with it!! lol

  1. Emily Said,

I loved what Beni did with her design the best :D I don't spend a whole lot of my deco things. I scrounge around thrift stores and flea markets for my supplies. Dollar stores are great too. You can literally buy a whole bag of different interesting buttons for $1 at my local thrift store. T-shirts are 75 cents that I can use for fabric or alter how I want it. I also purchased some beautiful ribbon at a fund raiser sale so don't be afraid to really look! The deco stuff at Wal Mart and fabric stores are kind of expensive which is why I get them on clearance :D

  2. Kettuki Said,

I loved the idea of making cat toys of cat hair ;D

  3. Patty Said,

I love deco and admire all the creativity the Japanese people possess. I'm with you, if I were to deco something, I'd rather not spend more than what the shirt is worth. I do know how to use a sewing machine, not well, but even if I do, I still don't deco my clothes. Partly, I'm lazy, partly I'm just uninspired. So, I guess it takes an artist to do that. :)

p.s. I bought some eraser kits too, not that I use them anymore, but I really enjoy the process and they're so fun to make.

  4. Hanie Said,

    Kirin, thanks for the video!
May I ask where can I watch the latest videos?
Because the coming episode on Tokyo Kawaii TV will be in Singapore then after that I think would be Malaysia.
I'm in Malaysia so I'm very excited to see that episode. > <

  5. kirin Said,

    75 cents for a T-shirt!? @w@

  6. kirin Said,

Haha, that was cute. I wonder if Pi-chan's hair will be as useful as that. :p

  7. kirin Said,

OMG, you've got the eraser toy! How interesting!! Yes, the process of making erasers looks so fun. There must be many interesting toys for adults to enjoy as well. ^ ^

  8. kirin Said,

How about NHK on demand? I don't know how people who live outside Japan can access NHK. http://www.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/

  9. cinnamon_girl Said,

I was thinking the same! Usually to deco something can cost a lot of money. (T_T)
Maybe you can reduce the cost if you make the deco parts by yourself (for example ribbons from used clothing fabric, using accessories what you don't like to wear anymore but can use their parts for something new, by making clay sweets… etc.).
Second hand shops or discount shops can help too!

  10. Kaoru Said,

kirin, thanks for the wonderful video!!!
it sure give me a lot of good ideas for my creations too!!!

i find the part where they use cat furs really sick….
    overall, a very interesting video!!!
i like the eraser part a lot ! the maker is so smart!!!
i recently bought a eraser kit toy box too! so much fun making those! =)

  11. kirin Said,

You too have the eraser kit toy? OMG!!

  12. kirin Said,

    Thank you for your comment.
Deco parts could be cheaper…I like rhinestones! (>_<) But maybe buttons in various color or shape will be useful for deco.

  13. Tinny Said,

I know some people with really many or really hairy dogs make yarn out of their dogs' hair… It's not very different from lamb's wool, but it WILL smell like a wet dog if it gets wet.

I love to do all kinds of handicrafts, I've even made some of my own clothes, but only some simple patterns, because I'm not very good with the sewing machine… I'm also the sort of person who will buy cute fabrics/buttons/yarn/whatever when I come across them, even if I don't have a use for them yet, so I always have a stash of things I can use when I get an idea! The downside of that is that I can never have enough closet and storage space >_<

  14. kirin Said,

    Hi Tinny,
Oh no~ dog's hair smells onece it's wet?! I don't want that. XD
You gave me an idea; even if I have no time to create something by myself now, I could keep cute fabrics and etc. for the future. That's at least better than doing nothing. Thank you!

  15. Patty Said,

I'm reporting back on the eraser kit… it looked so fun but it's much more tedious than it looks. Yes, you break these pieces of keshigumu and piece them together according to the template, and you can even make your own template. But it's easier said that done. I opened my kit last night, man, even the small eraser takes about 100 small little keshigumu pieces, and don't even let someone bump into you, because if you move while you're in the midst of your puzzle, the whole thing falls apart and out of sequence. I was so mad last night that I had to put it away and revisit later. LOL. =P

  16. kirin Said,

Oh, thank you Patty for revewing that kit. I was seriously thinking if I should buy it for fun, but wow, that sounds like another work to me! lol Maybe 1 time trial will be fine with me. :p
