Since my first trip to Malaysia and Singapore, I’ve been addicted to chicken rice. I crave for it every once in a while. I’ve been to Sin Tong Kee and other Singaporean or Malaysian restaurants in Tokyo since I came back in March 2010. This is also. A small Singaporean restaurant I found in Nakameruro.

It’s not on the main street. It’s located in a residential area, yet it’s not so far from the station. I’ve only been there at lunch time, and it was full of people.

I couldn’t take inside pictures because of other customers. I’d refrain from taking pictures when they can be in the pictures against their will. ^ ^; Well counter will be OK, because their face is not seen.

I ordered chicken rice. But any Singaporean restaurants in Tokyo do not seem to give us more seasonings such as grated ginger. I remember I could even ask for another serve for the ginger, thick soy sauce, and chili sauce in Malaysia for free. The lunch with soup was 880yen. Not bad. But I miss the ones from Malaysia or Singapore…I don’t mind if the chicken was not served so sophisticatedly. I want more ginger~~!

I’m sure many readers of this blog are from Singapore. Which chicken rice restaurant is good there? It was too short a stay last time: I met 5 people in 2 days. I was too busy chatting with Singaporean friends to remember other things well…Next time if I have a chance to go to Singapore, I’d love to stay longer and explore more local foods!! :p
BTW, why chicken rice is so addictive first of all? Is it only me? How about you?

Hi Kirin,
chicken is popular in Singapore. Some of them are not really that nice. To me the most important is the rice and the chilli. Then followed by the chicken. Normally for HAI NAN chicken rice, they will debone the chicken meat. The chicken meat should be tender and smooth.
Now I am in Tokyo, I had tried two places. The first one, near my station is called Asia Restaurant. It is nice, except that the chilli is not as spicy as in Singapore. The second one I tried is at Shimbashi, it is called Singapore Hainan Chifan. http://www.hainanchifan.com/hainanchifan/index.ht…
I can only say that the chilli is nice.
Nice time I am going to try Sin Tong Kee at Ebisu.
In Singapore, the best Chicken Rice are found in Hawker Centre or coffeeshop. So far, the one near my Singapore home flat was very nice. It cost SGD$2.50 for a plate of chicken rice with generous serving of meat. Additional SGD$0.50 for one whole hard boiled egg. Another is the Coffeeshop opposite Bugis Junction. It is also very nice.This is the 2 places which I miss badly.

Even though it might be lacking in ginger, the photos just brings me back. That's actually one of my favorite dish. When we were in South China Sea, that's one thing I demanded to have before leaving one of the islands.

Definitely i would like to visit Singapore and taste some of its food. Over here there are no singaporean restaurants as far as i know.

I can't say I'm addicted to it, but I really like it! I had some great Singaporean chicken rice when I was in Tokyo over the holidays somewhere in Roppongi. Sorry, I don't remember the name! I'll ask the person who took me there. I should have taken photos too so you can compare with the other places you've been to eh? ^^;
There were a lot of seasonings though, and you could easily get more. It was also quite reasonable I think.

Thank you Winnie!
S$2.50 for a plate of chicken rice is so reasonable!!
As I have not tried chicken rice from many different places, I cannot say how the meat or rice was compared with such and such. But I'm sure you can review it better, as you have tasted original one from Singapore. ^ ^; The funny thing is that chicken rice was the last thing I want to take when I saw its picture on my guide book. ^ ^;;

Are you able to have some nice chicken rice in the U.S, where you live now?
BTW, I love the kid's hat in your blog.
I cannot leave a comment because there's no Name/URL option so let me tell you here the hats are so cute!!
Also it's a bit of sorrow to say bye to Sew Crafty but all the best for your teaching at a new place.

Oh their food was so good!

Kirin, so nice of you to take the time to read my blog. I'll have to check the url for comment…
We found 2 places in Houston, Texas that has this chicken rice dish. Before there was only one place and the chicken was always dry. The last trip I went back to Hong Kong, that's the 1st thing I told my mom I want to eat. Of course, it's the best when it's authenic! ^_^
March 9th, 2011 at 2:41 pm
Ahhh!!! Yes!! The second one!!! ^^
海南鶏飯食堂 麻布店
But the guy I went with is a regular, so maybe they knew/he didn't have to ask for extra seasonings from the start. He spent some time in Singapore while working so he seems to know the food a lot! Either way, I thought it was quite good!

Hi Kirin,
Boon Tong Kee and Five Star Chicken Rice are the most popular chicken rice restaurant in Singapore.
However, the best chicken rice that I have tasted are usually found in hawker centers or coffeshops. (:

How interesting!!
Sounds like Singaporeans say the best chicken rice is from hawker center or coffeeshops.
Thank you for your opinion. ^ ^

Actually many hawker stalls have been around for a very long time and they have their unique way of cooking the rice as well as chicken.
The next time you visit Singapore, you may like to take the mrt train in Sinapore to the Toa Payoh mrt station and try the chicken rice at the food court at Basement 1 of the Toa Payoh hub (the Toa Payoh mrt station is part of the Toa Payoh Hub.)
The chicken is very tender & best of all, you can help yourself to as much ginger, chilli and the black soy sauce as you like ;')) There are are also many other stalls serving very nice food and the Singapore rojak there is the most popular stall with a very long queue but it is worth a try. (Even though you have to wait more than half an hour on busy days)

Ohh, I miss chicken rice! ^ ^
Toa Payoh! I got off at that MRT station but I don't think I checked out the B1 floor, even though I dropped at a coffee shop near the station. (I guess it was on the ground floor, not on the basement, so it's not what you recommended.)
OK, anyhow thank you for your recommends. I'll keep that in mind for my next visit.

Sure
) You must really try it for it is very good! I just ate one yesterday: I paid $3 for the chicken rice and added 50cents extra for an egg (in brown sauce). I poured heaps of ginger over the everything plus lots of chilli. I also added some dark black soy sauce & it was really yummy-li-cious!
)
The rojak here is also very famous. It is the Singapore-style salad with a black dressing made from shrimp paste & is quite sweet and has loads of crushed roasted peanuts sprinkled over it. The queue is quite long though ;((

Reading these comments, it triggered me to think about this place called Mr.Chicken in Harajuku I went a couple months ago. They speciallized in Hainanese chicken rice and as a kid growing up in Singapore eating chicken rice on a daily basis, the flavour was spot on, as if i was at lucky plaza with the mean antie. They had an interesting concept where they want to spread the knowelge of Singapore rather than just chicken rice like other resturants. Its defenitly worth checkin it out.
